The Asmat are an ethnic group of New Guinea, residing in the province of South Papua, Indonesia. The Asmat Tribe, found in remote West Papua, Indonesia, has a fascinating ancient culture and possesses world-renowned wood carving skills. Famous globally for their intricate wood carvings that depict their deep spiritual connection to their ancestors and nature, living a life tied to mangrove forests, rivers, and a rich ceremonial culture centered on ancestor worship, with a society divided into coastal (fishermen) and inland (hunters/farmers) groups, navigating a challenging environment with unique traditions, local wisdom, and increasingly modern influences. Known for their exceptional artistry, the Asmat people also have a complex social structure and a dark history of headhunting and cannibalism.
Asmat People - The former headhunters and cannibals of the Asmat were once very feared and have only been safe to visit for a few decades. Until today many Asmat villages are wild and culturally intact. The Asmat are one of the best-known indigenous peoples of New Guinea, famous for their woodcarving art and their deeply rooted warrior tradition. The art of the Asmat, in particular their Bis Pole (as the Asmat call the phael) and war shields, is known and appreciated worldwide. Their works of art are not just aesthetic objects, but carry deep spiritual meanings linked to the worship of ancestors and the stories of the tribe.

The Korowai, also known as the Kolufo, are an indigenous people of southeastern Papua, Indonesia, who are well known for building their unique houses in the canopies of trees. The tribe was largely uncontacted by the outside world until the 1970s. The Korowai tribe is an Indigenous people living in the rainforests of southeastern Papua, Indonesia, known for their traditional treehouses built in the jungle canopy to escape flooding and animals. The Korowai tribe, often nicknamed the tree people, is one of the indigenous tribes of Papua that has a unique lifestyle that has caught the attention of the world, namely their unique habit of building tree houses towering above the tropical rainforest, far from the reach of modern humans.
The Korowai tribe is one of Indonesia’s cultural treasures that should be preserved. Their unique life in harmony with nature provides inspiration to appreciate cultural and environmental diversity. Korowai tree houses are built using natural materials that are easily found around the forest, such as wood, rattan and sago leaves. They have extraordinary skills in building sturdy and stable constructions on trees.
The Korowai tribe is a community of hunters and gatherers. They depend on the forest to fulfil their daily needs. Hunting and gathering activities are carried out by men, while women are responsible for domestic work and childcare.
The staple food of the Korowai tribe is sago, which is processed into various types of food. In addition to sago, they also consume game such as wild boar, tree kangaroos and various types of birds. The Korowai adhere to animism and dynamism. They believe that the spirits of their ancestors and nature have great power and influence their lives. Traditional rituals are often performed to ask for blessings and protection from these spirits.

Day 01/04 June/Friday: Timika – Ewer/Agats – Asmat Tribe (-/L/D)
We strongly recommend that you arrive in Timika at least one day before this flight.
Meet at your accommodation in Timika & Transfer to the Airport at 06:00am.
Fly from Timika to Ewer by flight IW-1604 at 08:25 – 09:10.
From Ewer by motorized straigh on board the motorized canoe for about 1,5 - 2 hours to Ous village.
Lunch in boxes & Paddle or walk into the swampy jungle with the Asmat people to see the sago processing (sago is the main food in Asmat).
Make sure you are wearing a rubber booth, as we will be entering a sago swamp that is muddy and thorny.
The process to make pure Sago can be one day and some of the locals also take the sago worm for protein. You will have the chance to taste the local food.
Back to the village for overnight stay at local houses (use a tent).
Dinner will be prepared traditionally by a local cook of Asmat.
Day 02/05 June/Saturday: Asmat Tribe (B/L/D)
Prepare for leaving then heading Desep village for 2 hour by motorized canoe ride through the ocean.
Arrive at the village, walk to the longhouse, as usual when the guest arrives the Asmat people will welcome the guest by direct the guest to their longhouse.
All guests or visitors must respect the culture and traditions of the local community; therefore, we need to present offerings of coffee, sugar, and cigarettes upon entering the longhouse.
Today we want to see another Asmat ceremony. Ceremonies cannot be planned in advance, they have to be arranged on the spot. A Traditional mask dance are among the ceremonies we would like to see today. It is sure to be another day full of impressions.
Dinner will be prepared traditionally by a local cook of Asmat.
Overnight stay at local houses (use a tent).
Day 03/06 June/Sunday: Asmat Village (B/L/D)
Continuing by motorized canoe, we will travel from Desep to the next village—a journey of approximately one and a half hours by sea.
We will be welcomed with a dance performed by the Asmat people. They will then escort us into the longhouse, in accordance with the ancestral traditions we are required to observe.
Lunch in boxes will be served somewhere in the village or on the boat.
Make sure you get a great, unique photo today before we leave this village.
Hoping for favorable weather before the afternoon, we will set off by motorized boat for the hour-and-a-half journey to Agats.
Dinner in boxes will be served in the accommodation.
Overnight stay at Basic Accommodation.
Day 04/ 07 June/Monday: Asmat Village/Ewer - Timika (B/-/-)
After breakfast, at 06:00am by motorized canoe in approx. 30 minutes to Ewer airport for flight back to Timika by IW-1605 at 09:35 – 10:20.
Arrive in Timika Airport, Transfer to your accommodation in the city. End of our serivices.
