Historically, the Asmat people were documented headhunters and cannibals, believing they could absorb the spiritual power of their enemies through their skull. An intricate initiation ceremony involving captured heads invited young Asmat boys into manhood.
These people, the Asmat, are former headhunters and cannibals who made carvings for elaborate and continuous rituals and feasts that were armed to placate ancestral spirits. The Asmat believe that death occurs only through magic or murder. The former headhunters and cannibals of the Asmat were once very feared and have only been safe to visit for a few decades. Until today many Asmat villages are wild and culturally intact. The territory of the Asmat is traveled in boats. You will be accompanied by a guide, cook and boat crew. Wamena was a point of departure for many expeditions. The Dani villages are visited by virtually every tourist who sets out in west Papua. Some villages even show their original customs and hold mock wars. Another thing which brought fame to the Dani tribe are the several hundred years old ”smoked” mummies of famous tribesmen. Three of them can be seen in the Baliem valley – in Akima, Pumo and Jiwika villages. Baliem Valley area inhabited by the Dani people tribe, is the most fertile part of the highland covering the west of the New Guinea Island – Papua (Irian Jaya). Baliem Valley lies about 1600 m above the sea level, and it is surrounded by a crest of mountains some of which reach up to 4500 m. There are even some fish in the Baliem River which flows through the valley. The area covered by the Baliem valley is not large, roughly 60×30 km. See the map of baliem valley here. read more
To defend their villages or to raid others to avenge for tribe members killed, the Dani practiced regular warfare. However, anthropologists note that the “Dani wars” are more a display of prowess and opulence of dress and decoration rather than an all out war to kill the enemy. Dani warfare displays competence and exuberance, rather than the wish to kill. Weapons used are long spears, measuring 4.5 meters, and bows and arrows. Most often, therefore, there are more wounded than killed, and the wounded are quickly carried off the field. read more

Incredible experience snorkeling with whale sharks. I went on this tour from Bali, which was not an easy journey to Nabire - 3 planes there 2 planes back, exhausting! But I can say without hesitation that it was totally worth all the effort, truly a once in a lifetime experience with Jefalgi Papua Tours. Arriving in Nabire town, I felt a little uneasy because people really stare.. but I think this was due to the fact that they don't see many tourists. It's also possible I have a little extra paranoia. I am a solo female traveler so I had lots of safety related queries - but from the beginning the company were in touch on whatsapp. My guide met me at the airport and talked me through the itinerary. He then drove me around town to a couple of places so I could choose where I was most comfortable to stay for the that night in Nabire. They spoke great English which is nice as many people do not in this region. In the morning we travelled to Cenderawasih Bay, which was a couple of hours journey - first by car and then by boat. The little wooden lodgings was so pretty, it was nestled on a stunning coral coastline against the rainforest. see map of Cenderawasih bay here. Whale shark
