This step by step guide provides everything you need to know when planning a Raja Ampat trip. Start here to quickly find the answers to all your questions.
Step 1: Getting to Sorong (Domine Eduard Osok Airport) (SOQ)
There are no international flights into Sorong
Via Bali: Garuda offers non-stop flights from Bali, arriving in Sorong in time for the 0900 ferry.
Via Jakarta or Surabaya: Lots of airlines fly from Southeast Asian hubs to Jakarta and Surabaya.
Via Makassar: Silk Air flies from Singapore to Makassar (flights code shared with Singapore Airlines and Garuda Indonesia)
Air Asia offers direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to Makassar
Via Manado: Silk Air flies Singapore to Manado (flights codeshared with Singapore Airlines)
Note that these are merely the most convenient entry points for international travellers bound for Sorong. There are other international airports in Indonesia, but to the best of our knowledge, none of those offer non-stop flights to Sorong.
Step 2: From Sorong airport to harbour transfers
Online transport provider Grab is also available (in Bahasa called "Ojek", but you must leave the airport grounds to be picked up. a Grab fare from outside the airport to the harbour was IDR 50.000 for transfer.
If you don’t have a lot of luggage you can get a lift on the back of a motorbike (ojek) for about 30,000 Rupiah
If you’re trying to keep costs as low as possible you can get there for 10,000 Rupiah if you’re happy to walk a few hundred meters to the main road and catch the yellow public bimos (minibuses) to the city terminal, then transfer to the bimos heading for the harbor. Each leg of the trip is 3000 Rupiah.
Step 3: From Sorong Harbor (Pelabuhan Rakyat) to the Raja Ampat islands (Waisai)
3.1: Public Ferries (Sea Transport)
Except for holidays or unplanned interruptions, the schedule below is stable, and applies from June 1, 2025.
Sorong to Waisai: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday Time: 14:00
Sorong to Waisai: Wednesday, Friday, Sunday. Time: 09:00 and 14:00
Waisai to Sorong: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday. Time: 1400
Waisai to Sorong: Wednesday, Friday, Sunday. Time: 0900 and 1400
Public Holidays: Usually, only the 1400 departures operate on Indonesian Public Holidays.
Raja Ampat ferries depart from Sorong’s Pelabuhan Rakyat (public harbour). Journey time to Waisai is about 2 hours.
Bahari Express tickets are IDR 125,000 for economy class, or IDR 250,000 for a VIP ticket. A VIP seat will give you an adjustable-back chair in an airconditioned room.
Ferry tickets can be purchased on your day of travel at the ticket offices in the Waisai and Sorong port office buildings. Just ask at the port if you can’t spot those. Cash, cards and digital wallet payments via QRIS are accepted. Online booking of ferry tickets is not available.
Schedules can change without notice. Individual departures can also be changed at random.
The only way to absolutely guarantee that you will be back in Sorong in time for your flight is to return to Sorong the day before your flight leaves.
3.2: By Flights From Sorong to Waisai (SOQ-RJM)
Susi Air operates a service between Sorong and Waisai’s Marinda Airport. These are the only flights available into Marinda, and are on light planes with a 15kg baggage allowance. Contact us for schedule & fare.
You’ll need to get a taxi from Marinda Airport to the harbor to meet your pickup to Waisai.
3.3: By Charter Speedboats
If you’re in a real hurry, you can charter speedboats to take you directly to your accommodation. The speedboat harbor is about 200m west of the ferry wharf. Speedboats are far more expensive and a lot less comfortable than the public ferries or flying.
